I keep thinking there must be an easy way to take an existing page and save that as a template, but I haven't found it. I found some old posts here from many years ago talking about workarounds for making that happen. Since this seems like something everyone would want to be able to do, I'm hoping Atlassian has addressed this problem or maybe can explain why the software works the way it does.
For context, let's say I have a Word file, and I want to save it as a template. I simply open the document, make my edits, and then save it as a template. I can then open the template, make changes, save it as another template, and so forth. Simple.
Nothing has changed from the information that you found from years ago. Templates still have to be created as a template and there is no way to create a template from a page. I have been using the product for about a decade and it has always been this way. My guess is it was architected this way. There is a feature request for the functionality that you want and was submitted in 2006 but it has never gained any traction. https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/CONFSERVER-5877
