Is there a way to automate the process of moving attachments out of Confluence and into another tool

Anastasia Gourina November 14, 2023

Hi All!

We are in an interesting phase in our Confluence cloud usage. We have noticed that our teams have been sorting a range of attachments especially videos in their spaces. Moving forward we would like to change how teams us Confluence, more a wiki than. a file repository which it currently is.

We are looking for additional tools/software for our teams to sort their attachments in. Some options are OneDrive, Sharepoint or Microsoft Stream (for videos).

We have communicated to teams we want them to go through their spaces/pages and remove the attachments and have them stored in another tool. Now we are talking about some spaces having 500+ attachments stored of varying sizes and types. Changes are these attachments stored in Confluence may also be the only copy the teams have of it (talking legacy data, spaces created back in 2017).

I was wondering if there was a way to automate this process. Find a way to help teams move their attachments out of confluence and then into another. I realise you can download the attachments and then trying importing them elsewhere. But is there a way to create a connection saying "take space x and all its attachments and move them to tool/software y" during the move also deleting the attachments out of the Confluence space.

Is this even possible? I am first looking for solutions that don't involve 3rd party apps. Expoloring APIs or other methods first. M

My concerns too is that there are some attachments (not sure why) that are broken, either someone removed them, they have sat in the instance too long or don't exist anymore but still referenced in the spaces. I assume there is nothing we can do to fix this and no point exporting them out. What is the likeliness of us causing more attachments getting broken if we automate this said process.

Has any come across a similar use cause or have any advice?

Hi @Anastasia Gourina

As this could be a lot of data, I would suggest to reach out to Atlassian Support (

They might help as they are able to reach the backend and storage of your instance. They might be willing to provide a copy of all the attachments.

As I don't know any options for this and also no 3rd party apps that would help in this request.
