Dear Community,
last Tuesday we upgraded the Confluence Installation of one of out Customers to release 6.15.2. A few days later the Customer noted, that the word export now produces a .doc file instead of a .docx file.
Since my own attempts to switch the file format or find out if it is even possible to switch the format were in vain. I would like to ask you, if this can be done or if we are wasting or time on this one and should just get an extension to create word exports?
Thank you in advance
- Erik
So I contacted our Customer and found out, that you were both absolutely right. The local Administrator had tested a few export tools because they wanted to change the layout of the default pdf export without editing css.
At the time I administrated the update the tools were no longer installed, so I did not expect anything of this sort. Some of the addons probably left their marks on the Confluence Installation and somehow caused the Word Export to be .docx by default.
Thank you for your help
Have a great Week
- Erik
Thanks Steffen! Glad to hear you were able to determine the add-ons were providing the .docx functionality.
Take care, and have a pleasant rest of your week.
Regards,
Shannon

Hello Erik,
That's a very interesting case, thank you for bringing it up there.
For as long as I can remember, and when testing with previous versions of Confluence, the Word exports are created in .doc format, and not .docx. I've reviewed past tickets as well and can confirm this.
The .doc format for me is more universal because then I can open it in more applications than support .docx files, and I believe this might be the reasoning behind the choice to export to .doc.
If your exporter was previously creating .docx files, there's a possibility you were using an add-on.
If you aren't sure which add-on was providing that functionality, I believe Scroll Word Exporter for Confluence might provide that? I see that .docx is supported but it's not clear to me if it will export in that format, but it would be worth taking a look at.
Let me know if you have any questions!
Regards,
Shannon

Hello Shannon,
hello Nils,
thank you for your reply!
I will make contact with our customer and find out if any extensions were used. We have not installed anything of this sort, but there is of course always the possibility that someone else installed a trail version on an addon which is no longer active now.
I will report back once I know more ;)

Hi @Shannon S
Yep, our Scroll Word Exporter creates *.docx files. @Steffen Schmidt could it be possible that you've used our app here before?
Cheers,
Nils
