Imported data not showing up

Klaus Charlier January 3, 2024

I have exported and then imported a set of data (in German "Bereich") and everything went without errors. But the data does not show up in the destination.

If I re-run the import, then it reports a problem after 50% which I guess is, because the data already is in the destination.

I just can't see it...

Hi @Klaus Charlier and welcome to the Community!  What is the exact error that appears?  Have you checked the audit log for more info?  How are you importing (Word doc, XML, page, space, etc.)?

Klaus Charlier January 4, 2024

Hi Laurie.

There is no errormessage as such. When I ran the import the first time, it wen through without any error at all. At the end of the procedure, I was told, that due to re-indexing it might take a while befor I can access the imported data. That's why I waited until the next day.

Beeing relatively new to ot all, could you point me to where I can find the "audit log"

As to the format I used XML and there it was a space I wanted to move from one Confluence instance to another one

I forgot to mention: It was a move of a space from cloud to cloud...

My investigations took me a step further.
I have tried to access the imported site through direct URL, which results in this message:
You’ve stumbled on a restricted space
Only some people can view this. If you think you should have access, try asking the person who sent you here for help. Learn more about space permissions
OK. The way I understand this is, that the imoprted site had restrictions in place in the source cloud instance which prevent me from even seeing the site in the destination cloud instance.
What can I do with this dead data now? I would like to delete this inaccessable site data, set the permissions right in the source cloud instance and then redo the transfer.
But how do I delete something, that I can't even see? Or is there another way to solve this?

Hi there.

Nobody has an idea or could at least point me in the right direction?

@Klaus Charlier I have been following this, but not contributing because I want to learn what advice someone who knows about this gives you, rather than having any advice myself.

Given that I really know nothing about this ☺, I will just say that, if you had permissions in Cloud A to export the space and permissions in Cloud B to import the space, I would think that you would have the permissions in Cloud B to adjust the space restrictions there, rather than changing them in A and reimporting.

This makes sense to me, but there are many things about Confluence that don't work in a way that I would expect.

@Barbara Szczesniak

Hi there.

Unfortunately I can only confirm your statement about Confluence behaviour.

The reason why I am trying this is, that there is no onboard functionality for backup and resteore of sites or pages. As far as I know. What we (and I am sure many other business users of Confluence) want to have, is a proper backup. Since the cloud instances of Jira and Confluence do not offer this...

Anyway -  I am only a very short distance away from turning my back an both products.

Thanks anyway for your sympathy :-)

Regards from Germany.

Klaus.

Hello everyone.

I beleive, i figured it out.

I used XML as export format. This does not work for cloud instances as mentioned on the export page. CSV format is the only one that explicidly mentions cloud import.

Now that I might have worked out how to do the transfer correctly, I still need to get rid of the dead data in my Confluence site to be able to import the data, I originally intended to transfer.

My plan to achieve this is:

1. Create an export of my own good data in CSV format

2. Create a dummy Confluence site to test the import of said export

3. If successfull, I would like to delete my complete confluence instance including all data

4. Re-Create my instance freshly and re-import my own good data.

5. Delete dummy Confluence site (keep the world tidy...)

Any wee hints or comments on this planned procedure? Any pitfalls known?

Update:

Plan (see above) initiated - and failed.

I used the CSV format this time as mentioned, but the result is exactly the same.

The import runs through without any problems or errors, but I can not see the imported data afterwards.

What is going on here....?
