How to insert numbering column to a table and how to make the header row stick in Confluence

Uma Krishnamurthy August 14, 2023

Is there a way to add a numbering column to the table? Per the 5.8 release (https://confluence.atlassian.com/doc/confluence-5-8-release-notes-744325370.html#Confluence5.8ReleaseNotes-Hugewinsformassivetables), there should be a setting with an option to enable 'Insert Numbering Column' but I don't see it in mine. This is my view, should I be navigating somewhere else to enable this feature? The screenshot of my

Also, how do I make the header row of the table stick so that scrolling the data through a long table is easier to decode without having to scroll up to see the header for cross reference of the data we see in the table?

Thanks!

Hi @Uma Krishnamurthy

The numbering column is the icon just before the fill-in icon, the black square with the white square on the bottom right>

On my side the column are sticky by default in read mode but not in edit. Is that what you are referencing to ?

Ahh ok...Got it. Thank you.

Yes, my table headers are not sticky by default. I tried choosing the header table and header font but nothing worked. Not sure if I am missing any step here, I have highlighted the table I used.Screenshot_7.jpg

Hi

You may be in one of the following situation base on the documentation.

Also you could try an app that allow you to do that by enabling " Fit table to screen area"

@Florian Bonniec Thanks for the article reference, I dont think I am in any of the four situations mentioned unless I am missing something.

  • Is inside a page layout, inside another table, or inside a macro. No, it is just sitting on a page
  • Has no header row or there are cells in the top row that aren't marked as headers. I selected the header row table option as highlighted in my screenshot, hope that is the right one
  • Has a header column, instead of a header row, and scrolls horizontally. - It does do both for me
  • Contains another table, that has its own header row. I only have one table and no other tables on the page

Our org is strict about 3rd party apps and I don't think I have permissions to add it to my account/browser

I do not really see why it's not working, I cannot reproduce it on my side, you should raise a support ticket to Atlassian in that case

Thank you, I have raised a ticket internally as I am not an admin to contact Atlassian directly.
