How to correctly set the space ID for related documents created by a template

I have created a series of custom templates that I use for documenting our sprints in Confluence. The main sprint page has buttons that create new pages based on the “sub” templates defined in the buttons.

When I create the main sprint page from its template and save the new page, it’s ready to use.

When I click on one of the buttons the corresponding page is created in a different space. I think it was the space where I created the documents that I used to create the templates.

I found the following solution:

Immediately after I make the main sprint page, I edit the page and then edit each of the button’s settings and confirm the correct ID is set. 

It is always set properly. But editing the button settings defines/saves the right ID for some reason, even though it was correct.

Thanks for any tips on making sure the template is correct. I didn't see any template settings that relate to this issue. I left the Space key setting blank when I created the template:
