How do I move a confluence instance from one cloud account to another cloud account

Chris Glynne July 24, 2019

We currently have a Jira and Confluence cloud instance but they are on separate domains due to bad planning by the person who originally set up these instances.

We have our Jira on {instance1}.atlassian.net

We have our Confluence on {instance2}.atlassian.net

My objective is to align these under a single account {instance1}.atlassian.net , for better user management and billing management along with the ability to take advantage of some of the integration features offered across Jira and Confluence that are only available under a single account structure.

So, How do I either modify the account of my confluence instance to align with my Jira account name -or- what is the best way to migrate my confluence from {instance2} to a new confluence under {instance1}

Hi @Chris Glynne,

am I right that on your Jira instance you don't yet have another confluence instance in use? I'd suggest to ask the Atlassian support if they can move it for you.

Cheers,
Matthias.

You are right. We don't have Confluence enabled on the Jira instance.

I will try that route to see if they can make that change.

Got as response from Atlassian Support:

We have two possible ways to achieve the outcome you mentioned:

1 - Migrate Jira over to {instance2}.atlassian.net and after that change the URL back to {instance1}.atlassian.net

Check this documentation for further details: Changing the cloud instance URL address or migrating to a new cloud instance

Additional documentation for migrating Jira: Migrating from one Cloud instance to another Cloud instance

Unfortunately, it's not possible to perform a full import of Confluence in a Cloud instance that already have Jira, this is explained in the documentations above.

2 - Since you have a lot of spaces in your Confluence, we would need to take a full export, create a Confluence Server, import the data and use the Cloud Migration Assistant for Confluence it should take a while to perform this task but it's the most viable way.

A few questions we would like to ask you:

  • Do you have a deadline for this task?
  • When do you have your planned downtime to perform this migration?
  • We would need the approval from the main technical/billing contact of your accounts to proceed with the migration.

We would perform the second option for you since it involves the creation of a Confluence Server and starting the process of the migration, however, we don't a have full staff during the weekends yet, therefore we would need to perform this during Monday to Friday at any time.

Either way we would guide you through the process and have the pros and cons listed out for you, so you can do a better assessment with your teammates and decide which way to go.

So it is possible and there are a couple ways to achieve it. Now to figure out the best way forward.

Thank you for sharing @Chris Glynne.

Are you using any third-party apps in Jira/Confluence? That might affect the solution you choose, because the data of the apps might need some migration as well. And depending on your usage of Jira/Confluence apps, I would want to migrate the one with less app dependencies.
