I have been able to create a new user group, and even to assign it to spaces, however the users linked to this new group are not able to log in with read-only access (which is the outcome I looking for).

Hi @rl-admin
Along with the above links shared by Vero, once you create a group in confluence, you can assign just the view permission to that group in your space, so that the logged in users which are part of that group can only read/view pages within that space. Hope that helps.
