How can I add 'space character in the "name" of xhtml-macro parameter?

I am working with a parameter that contains a space in its name:

<parameter name="First Name" type="string"/>

However, when I attempt to retrieve a value in Java using the following code, I encounter issues:

params.get("IP Address")

I discovered that spaces are not permitted in XML. Saw a post with a link to the solution but that link no longer works. It seems I have to do something with the properties file.
