Dropbox links not working in Smartlinks or inline/embedded on a page

ZFK September 3, 2024

Hey All,

I have previously used Google Drive for smartlinks / embedding files and it has always worked and displayed the full document.

I am trying to do the same with Dropbox links (the document is a pdf) and Smartlinks doesn't work, saying "We can’t display this link as an embed. More about Smart Links in the content tree"

Similarly when I paste the link into a page instead of turning into a smartlink (showing the title of the document and offering options for inline/card/embed) it just remains as the link.

Atlassian articles on smartlinks say this should work too.

Update:

I have tried this from Chrome / Edge / Safari - just in case it was a browser thing but it doesn't work on any

Thanks for your feedback all - Atlassian is now prompting me to 'accept' your answers, but as I see it, they are not answers (though they good explanations). Just wanted to communicate why I haven't 'accepted' them :)

@ZFK we have an app that bulk changes smartlinks to URLs and the reverse.

What we have learned from Link Editor by Easy Apps users is that these sites do not work either (unless recently changed):

@ZFK I stand corrected. We ran a test and they now work. Atlassian is 'watching' in a good way.

Hello @ZFK,

Welcome to Atlassian Community and thanks for raising this issue with the Community. I've attempted to reproduce the same on my site.

Smart Links in the content tree

Displaying embedded documents in the content tree (sidebar) is not possible. Smart Links there will show as a link.

Embed PDF on Dropbox on page

When I paste a link to a Dropbox PDF on my page, I noticed there is no longer an embed option, but there is expected to be.

Screenshot-2024-09-09 at 08.11.35.png

I reported this discrepancy to the development team, and we were able to identify this new issue and have reported it as a new bug:

Please make sure to add yourself as a watcher and click on This affects my team so you'll stay up-to-date about any progress made on the bug. I'd love to say it will be fixed soon, but unfortunately, I'm unable to give an estimate until our development team does an initial assessment, and then prioritises the issue against their current backlog.

Embed PDF on Google Drive on page

I was able to embed Google Drive documents with no issue.

Could you share a screenshot of what you see when you try to embed a Google Drive document?

Thanks for your help!

Hey @Shannon S - apologies, I was using Google as an example that did work / displayed correctly, which is why I was confused when Dropbox didn't.

I appreciate your answer / that is may take time, but it is a significant blocker for me/my company, so keen to understand the next steps/timeline as soon as the assessment is complete.

Hi @ZFK

Thank you for confirming with me that embedding using Google Drive is working.

I have alerted the team that this is a significant blocker for you. I also suggest adding a comment on the bug ticket about how this is impacting your company, e.g. how many users are blocked and any financial implications. That will help the dev team to prioritise this issue.

Thank you,
