Indent doesn't work...
Table indentation works when you highlight some text with the whole table. So you're not just trying to indent the table but a bigger block of content which includes the table.
This gives you better control over the table positioning in comparison to using layouts.
Afterwards you can remove the text if it isn't needed. Saving/publishing the content does not remove this indentation.
This works on Confluence version 8.5.7 at least.

@Theodore Johnston Welcome to the Atlassian community
I am assuming you are on cloud. There is no way for you to indent the table. You can however use layouts to to offset the table and make it look indented. There is a section that is three columns and the columns on either end are smaller https://support.atlassian.com/confluence-cloud/docs/add-formatting-to-your-page/#Layouts

Can you accept this to help others?

Yep, sadly, there is no way for you to indent the table in Confluence Cloud.
Another potential workaround is to use the "Align center" option in the table options bar. The option bar is a bit hard to find. It appears at the bottom of the table while you are editing cells.
