Confluence - Missing scrollbar in IE7

Deleted user August 28, 2012

Hello, we have a serious problem in our Confluence Wiki. The vertical scrollbar has dissapeared in IE7 but works in other browsers. Since the company uses mostly IE7 we need to fix this issue ASAP. Any tips how to fix this?

Hello all, we just found that we had some wrong tags in the Main Layout and that was causing the issue. Anyway thank you for your help.

Hi Miroslav, what version of Confluence that you are using at the moment? Please bear in mind that IE7 is no longer inside our supported browser list. We strongly encourage you to upgrade the IE as soon as possible. Hope it helps.

Hello Rian, we are using Confluence 3.2.1_01 clustered. We know that IE7 is no longer supported and we encourage the users to update to IE8, but this particular problem also occurs in IE8. It happens only with the Global Look and Feel theme and it all started today. The scrollbars were visible before and everything was ok for the IE7 and 8 users. We don't know what caused this.

Mmm, the correct fix is "use a proper browser". The slightly less correct fix is "move to IE8 or 9". You should be considering that as IE7 is already down to a pretty minimal support model - you'll get little more than the odd security fix for it and bugs like this one simply won't be fixed.

Anyway, to help identify where it is and if you can fix it

  1. Are you using IE7 compatibility mode for some reason? If so, turn it off. (And stop using it - if you're using software that requires it, go kick the vendor)
  2. Can you try zooming in and out? (Ctrl+ and Ctrl-) Does it appear on a change, or only on specific sizes you land on?
  3. Could you try Tools>Internet Options - General tab, Accessibility button, uncheck "Use User stylesheet" and see if that fixes it (although I think it may break other stuff, so you probably want to put it back after testing)

Also we noticed it's only happening in the Global Look and Feel theme spaces and not in the Documentation theme spaces.

We (administrators) use mainly Firefox but the general users (we have around 15000 users) have IE7 + Windows XP on their workstations.

This issue appeared today and the scrollbar worked normally before. I highly doubt that it's a problem on the client side...

We are able to zoom in a and out but the up and down scrolling does not work.

Hi, that's because the documentation theme is compatible with IE7 and the global theme isn't for your version of Confluence.

Yup, that answers it - there's some css in the standard global theme that IE7 doesn't handle properly. The documentation theme doesn't need it.

Ok, we just found out it's not working also in IE8. The scrollbars are still missing.

The wierdest thing it just occured today. Before there were no problems with the Global theme and that's why many spaces are using it. I'm thinking that some kind of module/plugin failed or crashed but I see nothing usefull in the logs.
