Cannot upload attachments using the file uploader. Error "Could not upload the file to Confluence. The server may be unavailable."

Roman Wünsche April 15, 2012

I'm currently evaluating confluance for my company and have installed the linux binary on a HP ProLiant ML110 G7, 4GB RAM with Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. During some testing I noticed, that the uploader isn't working. I get the following error message everytime I upload a file (Tested: .txt, .png, .pdf).

"Could not upload the file to Confluence. The server may be unavailable."

The curious part is: Drag&Drop to the window works. The file is uploaded to the server and stored correctly under /var/atlassian/application-data/confluence/attachments/. Only the HTML-Uploader isn't working. Tested with latest Google Chome and Firefox.

I've checked the logs under the following paths:
/var/atlassian/application-data/confluence/logs
/opt/atlassian/confluence/logs

I've also used "hercules" in the atlassian support tools inside the admin area. Both with no result.

Any ideas?

Thanks for your help
Roman

Hi Roman,

This issue could be caused by the configured base URL that is not matching the URL you use to access Confluence via the browser. For example, you access Confluence via http://atlassian.net:8090 while the configured base URL from Confluence Admin > General Configuration is http://atlassian.net/confluence.

As a resolution please ensure that the configured base URL must match the URL you use to access Confluence via the browser. Update the base URL from Confluence Admin > General Configuration.

Hope this helps.

Cheers!

I agree with Fernando that most probably this issue is caused by the mismatched of base URL. We have a smiliar KB on this issue here: https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/CONFKB/Upload+attachment+function+does+not+work+in+Editing+mode

I've updated the regex to accept "Could not upload the file to Confluence. The server may be unavailable." entry.

Attachment sizes can be configured according so its hard to know what the limit is but by default its 10MB. Note: There is also a space permission to allow for attachments to be uploaded/deleted.

You may be encountering this outstanding bug:

Hope this helps!

Do we have limitation on the file size? I am getting the same error but I checked base URL and it matched with the URL.

I am trying to upload a file of size up to 34 MB but getting the error message.

"Could not upload the file to Confluence. The server may be unavailable."
