There is a mention of Search by author, category , topic. Does category here mean JSM Knowledge Base Categories? Is there such an option to select the category created under JSM Knowledge base directly while publishing a page on confluence?

When you publish a Confluence page, there is no direct relation to a category on JSM. However you could use page templates to achieve that.
