Attachments Macro Not Working "Error retrieving attachment versions"

Zachary Love January 2, 2025

Hello! I have a few questions about the current Attachments Macro in Confluence.

Problem Definition

I have an Attachments Macro on a Page. I have adjusted some of my attachments throughout updating the Page(changed background picture, removed documents, etc.), but these files still appear in the macro. Because these files are no longer present/needed on the Page, I would like to delete them from the Attachments Macro view. However, an Error is generated when I try to delete them from the macro(by expanding then clicking delete). This error completely shuts down the macro, and I have to refresh the page to view the macro again. This happens almost exclusively with picture format files.

Oddly enough when I click "Download All", I am still able to download the full versions of these removed files, no matter how long they've been removed. At this point I am unable to delete these files and prevent them from being visible in the Attachment Macro, which is my goal.

Steps I've Taken

1. I have downloaded the files that were originally removed and reintroduced them to the Page. (Did not work, still generated Error)

2. Step 1, but with also deselecting the "Include old attachments versions" (Did not work, still generated Error)

3. Refreshed the Page. (Did not work)

4. Deleted macro, and then readded the macro. (Did not work)

Questions

1. How do I remove these files from the macro view?

2. Is there any way to specifically "refresh" the Attachments Macro so that files that are no longer visible, or not added specifically to the macro, are omitted?

3. Is there a way to initially prevent this macro from collecting every file that has ever been added to the Page?

Found a solution!

It seems as though each Page, throughout its life, creates an archive for files that have at one point been attached to that Page. Turns out, once you edit that Archive, or delete files from it, they stay deleted and will not reappear within the Attachments Macro.

Here's how to fix this error if you are facing it.

1. Upload a word document to your Page, any one will work.

2. Go to the attachments macro on your published Page, select the added document and then select Properties.

3. At the top of the properties page, click on "Attachments". This is the "archive" I mentioned earlier, that will show all files that have a history on your Page.

4. Add or delete any associated files

@Zachary Love Deleting the image, video, or other file from being displayed on the page does not remove the file from being attached to the page. You need to use the Attachments page for the Confluence page.

To open this page, select More actions (ellipsis at top right of page) > Attachments > Files.

You can use this page to

  • attach new files to the page (the file won't appear in the page content, but will be picked up by the attachments macro)
  • upload new versions of a file
  • download all files attached to the page
  • see all versions of a file
  • add comments or labels for a file
  • set file properties
  • view the file
  • delete the file
