New App: Edit Confluence Pages using Markdown, Storage Format (or both at the same time)

DJ March 31, 2022

Hello all!

My team and I recently released a Confluence Cloud App and Data Center Plugin that we have used internally for some time, and wanted to share.

Alt Text Editor is an alternative editor for Confluence, that allows you to edit your pages in CommonMark markdown or Atlassian Storage Format (or using both formats at the same time!).

The editor converts back and forth between markdown and storage format as you type.

When you save your page, there are no macros or other trace that the user edited the page using markdown.

Optional backstory 🤗

The problem that we were trying to solve internally is that we have a diverse team that likes to edit in a bunch of different, personalized ways - and we grew fatigued by some combination of

  • Wrapping our markdown up in macros, which made it harder for team members who prefer the native Confluence editor to contribute
    • The macros that exist today are awesome, but macros mess with our ability to search for content and programmatically parse pages, as they stay in the page content
  • Using the native markdown converter, which is one-way and caused us to have to do some dual-maintenance of documentation
  • The general inability to tweak content to be just right for our needs at a lower, text-based, level
  • We are LONG TIME Confluence users, and used to be heavy users of the previous editor's wiki syntax... and we wanted those features back

Anyway, if your team has any similar challenges, give it a spin and let us know what you think!

Cheers,
DJ

We are in the same situation, exactly.
