Confluence data center multi site setup

Seetharaman k July 28, 2018

Hi,

I am trying to configure Confluence as a globalized setup. We have physical data centers in multiple countries. I would like to setup a single confluence environment where users from multiple regions can access and use it. From Atlassian documentation it is clear that Confluence Data Center product does not support multi site clustering. Is there any way I could setup such an environment? Or it would be great if people can suggest best practices to achieve such an environment.

Thanks

Hello,

Have you considered a Cloud option instead? It would work better with global user base and would reduce complexity of setup.

Hi Igor,

Cloud is not an option for me due to various reasons. Is it possible using Confluence server or data center?

Not with a self hosted solution, you next best option is AWS, as described here https://confluence.atlassian.com/confeval/other-atlassian-evaluator-resources/does-data-center-support-geo-clustering it still will not be global distribution, howewer. DC is designed for hot failover and availability, so nodes have to remain in the same datacenter for it to work efficiently

Apart from the AWS solution, is there any other way to connect 2 Confluence data centers and sync them in a timely manner?

Not natively, no.

Third-party plug-ins might offer a type sync solution, like Comala Workflows - Remote Publishing

Ok thanks for the suggestion. Just a quick question on Confluence DC. What is the ideal distance where we can have the data center nodes so that the clustering works fine?

On the same LAN section in the same building, ideally in the same room and rack.

@Igor M_ Any similar opensource suggestions? Also what do you think of Road runner for Confluence?

Does it mean that Atlassian does not provide any solution for International Companies located in different locations like Australia, USA, Europe etc? It means that you have to make a decision to select one region and other customers/users from different continents have to live with SLOW instance....

Correct.  There's no geographically remote clustering yet (Data Centre itself was a massive challenge).  It is high on the list of things to get into DC, but not ready yet.

Some of our distributed clients have had significant success with simple network provisioning and tuning, but many reach for shared projects - separate servers but with apps to synchronise copies of projects.

Is the geographically remote clustering still not available with Atlassian products?  Our company has users distributed across the world. We have second highest number of users farthest from our primary node and are experiencing higher roundtrip latency.

No, still not yet.
