Introducing Automation for Confluence

Header for automation.png

We’re excited to introduce Automation for Confluence, now available in early access. It is available to preview for Confluence Cloud Premium and Enterprise customers.

Save time and energy when managing content across your growing Confluence site with Automation for Confluence by setting rules to complete a variety of repetitive tasks and workflows. With valuable time added back into your day you’re empowered to focus more on your creative, human skillset instead of tedious paperwork and housekeeping.

To get started, Site and Space Admins can setup space or global automation rules.

Image 1 Community Post.pngImage 2 Community Post.png

Automation rules are comprised of trigger, conditions, branches and actions that are formatted as “If this, then that.” The very first step to creating your automation rule is to create a trigger, which sets the rest of your rule in motion.

Image 3 Community Post.png

When you’ve selected your first trigger you have the ability to add conditions, branches or go straight to setting up an action for your trigger. For instance, you may want to schedule an automatic page creation for a meeting that recurs weekly, where you spend time each week manually creating the page.

Image 4 Community Post.png

Once you’ve setup all the components for your automation rule, you can mark that tedious task off your to do list and let Automation for Confluence do the work for you.

Image 5 Community Post.png

As your rules run and changes are made you can refer back to the audit log to track changes and ensure everything is still running smoothly.

Don’t know where to start? We’ve provided templates for automation that you can begin using immediately.

Hi @Sheerine Baucum

Great stuff – This looks super-exciting!

Can you share any information about extension points for Marketplace apps?

Thanks,
-Stefan

Super excited. Great stuff.

Any native triggers for taking action in Confluence from a Jira trigger. I guess there will be Webhooks but hopefully there would be a way to handle authentication if that is the only way.

Will you be able to generate a confluence page based on a trigger in Jira?

For instance,  when a specific issuetype gets logged,  to generate a confluence page with the contents of the issue?

@Stefan Kleineikenscheidt _K15t_ Thank you for your question! Our team is currently working on expanding this functionality and would love to hear your feedback on how you would use this. What would you like to see regarding extensions in the marketplace?

@Michael Mueller Currently we are not able to accommodate adding labels to page attachments automatically, but we are looking into adding this to Automation for Confluence. Can you please share a specific example of how you would use that functionality with us so we can better understand your use case? Thank you!

Dear @Sheerine Baucum , thank you for getting back!

There are two or three use cases it would help me a lot personally:

1. When one uploads a file to the attachments macro via drag and drop or just inserts it into a new page it would be nice to have the option to assign different labels to the uploaded file, also option to use the pagename, spacename and spacekey.
Maybe this could also be sorted via some attachments macro options - but it is not availabe yet. So maybe a case for automation ?

2.  When I move a subpage to another page or folder it would be nice to have the option to remove, add and/or replace labels of any attached file and /or the page itself.
Syntax could be for example something like:
When new page / or subpage is created or moved to page  and If page name  = "XYZ" or includes "xy" in space  A,B,C  then do replace existing labels  with label "XYZ,@parentpagename,@pagename,@spacename,@spacekey,@author .....)

Hope this makes a bit sense outside my bubble  :-)

Best regards, Michael.

Hello @Sheerine Baucum ,

Can we use this automation in combination to JIRA automation ? I would like to make my service request automatically create confluence page :)

How long does it take to get approved for EAP?

We would like to test Automation while we got the Conf Premium plan active :)

This is great news! I am excited and looking forward to see all the power and features that Automation for Confluence would provide.

@Sheerine Baucum Is there any plan for creating an Automation for Confluence app for Confluence Server and/or DC platforms as well?

@Mark D @Jaco van Dyk @Samuel TAORMINA  Thank you all for your comments regarding Jira and Confluence integration. This is planned for automation in the future, but not yet implemented in our Early Access Program. However, you will be able to set something like this up using the "Send Web Request" action. If you have any additional use cases beyond what you've already provided, please add them here to ensure we don't miss them. Thank you!
