Dear Atlassian,
Please find the UI/UX person that decided it would be a GREAT idea to remove the
create-new-link-to-uncreated-page feature and FIRE them.
Isn't the main feature of a wiki being able to to create a link to a page that doesn't exist?
Then after the page is published, the user can click on the link and auto create that page?
Removing this feature forces us (your end user) to have to open a new tab, and create the new page, then switching back to the tab we are currently editing to link to the new page.
This is VERY cumbersome. In fact, the reason I started with confluence in the first place, was previous to this new editor experience, we could create links to new pages that didn't exist.
It TRULY is a TRAVESTY that you have removed this feature, and causes MUCH user pain.
WHEN will this feature come back?
The feature does existing in Confluence Cloud, at least it works on my instance. Here is how you create the placeholder:
[Placeholder Page Name]()
. [Link] (http://a.com)
.Enter
or Return
to create the placeholder. The only thing you cannot do is adding a placeholder to a template.
Btw, here is the public roadmap for the new Confluence editor, Confluence Cloud editor roadmap.

This was gone for a while, but they've re-added it with a different syntax from Confluence Server: https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Confluence-articles/Link-to-undefined-placeholder-pages/ba-p/1412785
