Why is Confluence blocked from Johannesburg, South Africa?

Graham Leggett October 6, 2023

When attempting to connect to confluence from Johannesburg, South Africa, the connection times out.

Has the country been blocked?

Hi @Graham Leggett ,

there are no active incidents on confluence https://confluence.status.atlassian.com/

Please ask to a confluence administrator to verify if there are some IP allowlist rules in place (https://support.atlassian.com/security-and-access-policies/docs/specify-ip-addresses-for-product-access/)

Hope this helps,

Fabio

Hi @Graham Leggett ,

I hope you are doing well!!

By looking at the URL it is a Datacenter or Server version Confluence which completely managed by the your organisation and it may have some restriction enabled or site is not exposed on internet. They may have enabled firewall. I would suggest you to check with your IT team.

Regards,
Mayur

Hi Graham, just thinking about a few troubleshooting questions.  Have you tried a different computer, browser, or even someone else's account?  Trying to eliminate some variables.  Are you using a VPN?  If so, are there any country settings that could impact this?

I just did a quick google search and it looks like there are Atlassian Confluence Developers in Johannesburg.

Could it possibly be something your company might be blocking?

Hope that helps.

Without a VPN, the https://confluence.certgate.com/ site is not accessible. Most specifically "Hmmm... can't reach this page. confluence.certgate.com took too long to respond."

With a VPN, with the region set to the UK, this site works.

This means that the owners of this confluence have not made it accessible to the whole world - there are firewalls blocking your access, or region locks on the network the Confluence is running on.  Using a VPN means you are tunnelling into a region that they have allowed in, or into the network where it is available.

You will need to talk to the network admins of the organisation that is running the Confluence - it's not a Confluence problem, it's the way their network is secured.
