I’d like to tell you a story. A few months ago, one of our internal data platform teams needed a place to catalog, discover, and leverage their data sets at scale.
The team found that Compass was an excellent fit, because it could help them:
break down silos and improve data accessibility by cataloging things in a unified place
quickly find the data important to them among the vast amounts of surrounding information
improve the context, quality, and relevance of their data with component metadata
easily discover who data owners are with owner teams
and ensure a high level of data quality and consistency with scorecards.
Confident that the team had found the right tool for the job, they imported hundreds of data components to Compass, and worked with the Compass team to create three more data component types to properly define them.
Internally, we were so chuffed with the results that we felt compelled to share the value around – with you!
To that end, we’re adding three more data component types to Compass.
Dataset: A collection of data about a specific topic that can be referenced by code, generally a table.
Data product: A governed, self-contained, cohesive, read-optimized data unit.
Dashboard: Data visuals that provide views of key performance indicators relevant to a particular objective or business process.
For any new components you create or import, you can categorize them under one of these types.
For components you’ve already got, you can change their type to one of these types.
If you’re on a data team, or work with data sets, we’d love to know if there’s any related features that could be added to Compass to improve how you track, manage, and leverage data.
