I'm going to use the thread to highlight both the importance and plight of Mangroves:
Importance
They provide our fish species a nursery for many young fish species and keeps the cycle going
They can trap up to 5x more carbon dioxide than inland tree species
They are the best natural protection against the might of the ocean
Biggest Threat
Deforestation for development, farming and land reclamation. I have been to an area of Mangrove in Malaysia that sits about 1km from the current coastline because they built on the land that used to be costal mangrove. This small protected Mangrove area survives due to a man-made waterway that replenishes the area during high tide
