working with terraform using bitbucket pipelines

I was able to deploy resources in AWS using Terraform and Bitbucket Pipelines, but I'm unclear how to work with the same resources that were created in the pipeline. What if I need to modify those resources in the future, or delete the entire stack altogether?

What is the deployment pattern when using Bitbucket pipelines with Terraform? Maybe the terraform files should be written to s3, and a step added to the pipeline to retrieve and save the state files?
