"No supported authentication methods available" on brand-new repository

joymaker3 August 26, 2018

following tutorials, I created  a new repository. When I click on its page, I get the following instructions:

Step 1: Switch to your repository's directory

cd /path/to/your/repo

Step 2: Connect your existing repository to Bitbucket

hg push ssh://hg@bitbucket.org/joymaker3/shasta-384

These instructions don't work. Instead I get an error message that pops up,

"No supported authentication methods available."

I see some other posts on this site about this error happening when somebody updated their software, but for me, this is just a brand-new start, a brand-new repository. What am I supposed to do? If it's going to be so darn easy and automatic, can't it set up an SSH connection for me, or lead me through the process?  I'm confused and frustrated.

Running on Windows 7.  I'd be using TortoiseHg if I could get that far.

Did you add your public SSH key to your Bitbucket account?

Eventually I figured out how, but only because I found someone else's instructions involving a third party piece of software called PuTTY.

I strongly urge you to make this whole issue much clearer in the instructions up front, the ones I quoted above.this took an hour longer than it should have, because I can find all the information in one place.

Sorry, that's "can't find all the information in one place."
