Where is the server.xml file located?

James K. April 6, 2021

I continue to see references to the server.xml file, but when I search on my system, there isn't one. When does the server.xml file get created, and where does this server.xml file reside? I am having issues connecting to bitbucket thru my localhost:7990 connection since I've generated the self signed certs. I followed the instructions here, that were given to me by my VDI tech.

Has anyone experienced the same issue, and if so, how did you navigate thru the solution?

Hi @James K. , welcome to the Community!

Bitbucket Server uses a file called bitbucket.properties since version 5.0 to host the types of things that were previously in server.xml, or would be in server.xml for Jira or Confluence. The default location for this file is <your-bitbucket's-home-directory>/shared , which is an upgrade-safe location that won't be wiped away during a Bitbucket application upgrade.

Are you looking to put your Bitbucket Server instance behind a reverse proxy, or serve HTTPS directly from the application? Here is the detailed documentation for enabling HTTPS:

Happy to help if you're stuck with any of the particular implementations after locating your bitbucket.properties file and working through the specific document for where you're going to terminate the SSL connection. Just give a shout!

Cheers,
Daniel
