Migrating Bitbucket: Server Edition on Windows to Datacenter Edition on Linux Server

Matthew January 18, 2024

Hello,

We are running Bitbucket Server Edition in Windows for several years, containing numerous projects, repositories and add-ons (plugin apps).  We procured Datacenter Edition licenses and will receive them soon.  We have (2) Red Hat Enterprise Servers ready for Bitbucket Datacenter (PROD & TEST).  Can anyone provide feedback on how to migrate this?  Any tips, do's or don't s would be appreciated :)

Thanks,

Matthew

Hi Matthew,

The general steps on migrating from Windows to Linux and moving from one server to another can be found in the following two Atlassian resources:

We don't have specific recommendations for RHEL, though here are a couple things to pay attention to:

  • Git version: RHEL repositories typically distribute Git 2.18.x. Depending on the Bitbucket version you are running on, you may need to manually install a compatible version of Git. Sometimes this means compiling it from source.
  • SELinux: we have seen some instances where SELinux seems to be more restrictive in RHEL systems in comparison to other distributions. Sometimes, this causes problems with Bitbucket when running it as a service. If the service doesn't start, remember to check SELinux audit logs as it might indicate why the process was denied.

Hope these pointers will set you off to a good start for the migration.
