How to recover account email using only username

Simillustra Web Technologies November 18, 2023

I have a username to my bitbucket account which i use with a git client to access my repositories on bitbucket. Until recently, i lost these due to a hdd crash. Is there a way to initiate recovery of the email address attached to the username? i would appreciate any help i can get.

Thank you in advance

Hi and welcome to the community!

If you have an app password for this account that has at least Account: Read permissions, you can use the following API endpoint to get email addresses associated with this account:

Example:

curl -u Bitbucket_Username:App_Password -X GET -H "Content-Type: application/json" https://api.bitbucket.org/2.0/user/emails

If there are email aliases in the account they will be returned as well, but the field is_primary will indicate the primary email of the account (the one used for logging in to the website). Please note that the API call requires an app password for authentication and not the account's password, as we have deprecated the use of account passwords for API.

There is no way to recover the account's email address using the username only and the Bitbucket support team cannot disclose emails of accounts due to our privacy policy.

If you don't have an app password for that account, then I would suggest trying to log in to https://bitbucket.org/ from browser with any of the email addresses you own, and see if any of them logs you into the correct account. In case you use GMail, please keep in mind that myemail@gmail.com and my.email@gmail.com share the same inbox in GMail, but for Bitbucket they are considered separate/different email addresses.

Please note that if you get asked to provide a username and create a new account after logging in with a certain email, this means that there is no Bitbucket Cloud account with that email as primary, so you can skip that email from the process.

Kind regards,
Theodora

thanks for the timely response, i do appreciate the time and effort you put in to help our however i don't have a app password but account password, i have tried the emails i have, none did turn out to match the account.

i can however provide the username and list of the repos in that account if that would help the Alassian team to verify my ownership of the repo.

Thanks again for the timely response i do appreciate

Hi,

I'm afraid that we cannot share the email addresses listed on a Bitbucket account. We have no ability to verify ownership of the email or account, except based on the requester's email address. We cannot do verification based on username and list of repos.

Kind regards,
Theodora

Hello Theodora,

thanks for your timely response, however You don't have to be afraid to tell me what you can and cant do with the limitation options surrounding this system.

I am just appalled and disappointed at the outcome of event,  same unsolvable options from the support team. it appears if you are on a free plan, your issue would simply be treated lightly or tossed off.

i would have to find other options to recover works that i trusted bitbucket to safeguard

thanks for the time and efforts you did put in trying to resolve this.

kind regards,

Hello @Simillustra Web Technologies ,

I apologize if you feel your issue hasn't been addressed as seriously as it should have been. Your concerns are important to us, regardless of whether you are on a free plan or a paid one.

Regrettably, due to the Atlassian privacy policy, we from support are unable to provide or confirm the email address associated with your Bitbucket account, as the email address is used to verify ownership. This is a policy we strictly adhere to, in order to protect the security and privacy of our users.

However, there are some steps you can take to recover your account. You could try to log in with any other email addresses that you own and check if there's an existing Bitbucket account for it.

Also, you could check your different email inboxes for past emails from Bitbucket Cloud. Any email you've received coming from Bitbucket Cloud might help you identify that particular email address has a Bitbucket account associated with it.

I hope that these suggestions will be helpful in your attempts to recover your work.

Thank you, @Simillustra Web Technologies .
