How to prevent all groups added automatically to the newly created repositories?

DFCC team November 10, 2022

Hi,

We are using the standard plan of the Bitbucket cloud in our company. We are facing a issue when creating a new repository.

If we are creating a new repository, it will automatically add the user groups to all that newly created repositories. Then we need delete those unwanted group access to the repositories by manually.

Is there a way to resolve that issue?

Thanks.

Hi @DFCC team,

This is controlled by a setting for each user group which you can disable.

Please follow the steps below:

  • Open the workspace on Bitbucket Cloud website
  • Select Settings from the left sidebar to open the workspace's settings
  • Select User groups from the left sidebar

For each user group that you don't want to automatically gain access to newly created repositories:

  • Select the user group
  • Select Edit
  • Change the setting Automatically assign permissions for new repositories to None and then Confirm the change

If you have any questions, please feel free to let me know.

Kind regards,
Theodora

@Theodora Boudale  - related question: When removing the user group automatic access grant setting, will that revoke permissions previously granted to repos based on this setting?

Hi @zax.rosenberg,

Permissions previously granted won't be affected if you remove the user group automatic access grant setting.

This only affects permissions in the new repos created after you remove the setting, meaning that users won't get automatically access to newly created repos unless they have been given access via Project settings.

Kind regards,
Theodora

But Automatically assign permissions for new repositories is grey out for each group. what to do in that case. My problem is whenever new user is created, they automatically added to each group. So I want remove this and instead automatically added to all group. I want to add them to only relevant group.

Hi Umer,

The option is greyed out because we are going to remove it on October 30, 2023. If you click the info icon next to this option, this is mentioned there.

You can see more details in the following blog post:

Finally, we are deprecating the ability to configure the automatic assignment of permissions to groups for all new repositories created. This feature was implemented long ago as an alternative mechanism for configuring repository permissions at scale and is being phased out by project permission inheritance. All new repositories will inherit the permissions set at the project level and not require explicit permissions to be configured unless it varies from the project.

To create the least amount of disruption, we are deprecating these features on group settings, but we won’t be removing them overnight. Rather, we will have a six-month grace period starting the day of the general release of project permissions to ensure that all customers have ample time to adjust to changes introduced for project permissions and permission inheritance. At the end of the grace period, we will remove the Create repositories permission and the ability to Automatically assign permissions for new repositories from within group settings.

For the issue with your user, please create a new question via https://community.atlassian.com/t5/forums/postpage/board-id/bitbucket-questions and we will look into it. It's best to have a separate question per issue, otherwise, a certain post can become convoluted and difficult to follow.

Kind regards,
Theodora
