How do I gain access to Users and Groups?

I'm very new to this, so apologies if the answer is incredibly obvious. I need to grant access to my professor in my repository as a read-only. But the "Users and Groups" section that displays in the Workspace settings under "Access Management" does not display for me, yet it does for him.

Is there a permission somewhere I have to enable for myself? Did I set up my Bitbucket account wrong possibly?

I have also checked the Repository settings for any section like this, no luck.

Hi Jason,

Bitbucket Cloud workspaces are now created via an organization in https://admin.atlassian.com/ and groups can also be created only within an organization. For these workspaces, the option Product access shows under Access Management in the workspace settings. Older workspaces, that were created before we introduced this change, have group management within Bitbucket and they have the option User groups under Access Management in the workspace settings.

Your workspace has user management in https://admin.atlassian.com/, which is why you cannot see the User groups option.

How to add a user to you repository

In workspace settings, if you select the Product access option under Access Management, you will be redirected to the organization in https://admin.atlassian.com/ where this workspace was created. The new page will show you all user groups created by default for this Bitbucket workspace.

You can either select an existing user group and then select Add group members to add the user, or you can create a new group with the Add groups option and then add the user to the new group. Please be mindful of the different roles for each group. If you select the dropdown under Product roles for a specific group, you'll see all roles available and what type of access each role has.

After you add the user to a user group, you need to ensure that this group has access to Bitbucket. The group can be added either to a single repository, or to a project, so that it has access to all repos of that project.

Adding a group to a single repository

  1. Open the repo on Bitbucket website
  2. Select Repository settings from the left sidebar
  3. Select Repository permissions from the new left sidebar
  4. Select Add user or groups
  5. Start typing the group name and you'll see suggestions with the existing groups from https://admin.atlassian.com/
  6. Select the group where you have added your professor, select a level of access (Read, Write or Admin) and then Confirm.

Adding a group to a project

If you add a group to a project, then the users belonging to the group will get access to all repos of that project and any new repos you may create in this project in the future.

  1. Open your Bitbucket Cloud workspace
  2. Select Projects from the top menubar
  3. Select a specific project
  4. Select Project settings from the left sidebar
  5. Select Project permissions from the new left sidebar
  6. Select Add user or groups
  7. Start typing the group name and you'll see suggestions with the existing groups from https://admin.atlassian.com/
  8. Select the group where you have added your professor, select a level of access (Read, Write, Admin or Create) and then Confirm.

Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions!

Kind regards,
Theodora

Hello @Jason Westmark

This could be due to insufficient permissions. Bitbucket workspace settings are typically restricted to administrators, so ensure that your role in the workspace includes admin privileges. If your professor has admin rights, ask them to adjust your permissions or add you as an admin.

If your account setup seems correct but you still can’t access the section, it might be worth double-checking your workspace configuration.
