Deletion of code

Edited

Hello,

We are looking to move off of Bitbucket and had some questions concerning deletion of the code from Bitbuckets and its backups. We want to make sure that there is no copies left anywhere once we move it off.

1. Does Bitbucket retain any of our code after we delete the code and account?

2. In this document: https://confluence.atlassian.com/bbkb/does-bitbucket-backup-my-repositories-1168845079.html. It states that Bitbucket backs up to an AWS Vendor, who is this vendor and will they also delete the code when we delete Bitbucket?

3. When we delete the Environment, does it Delete ALL Code and ALL backups?

Thanks!

Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

I'm sorry that you feel the need to downgrade to another git management tool, but TLDR, yes, your code, in your repositories will be kept.

For a while.  Not forever.

There's a whole string of rules and date gates here, but the shortest story is:

  • You unsubscribe or stop paying for the service.  You get an "end date" after which you will not be able to access the service.
  • From the end date, none of it is available to anyone other than Atlassian.  (And it is encrypted, so all they can do is restore it from a backup if asked, no-one can read, let alone write to it)
  • After 30-40 days, they shut down (archive) your site.
  • 122-133 days later, it will drop out of Atlassian's backup cycles.

At that point, there's nothing left.

Thanks for the response!

I see in point 3 that you said that it will "(archive)" the code. Is this archive also deleted after the 122-133 days?

Yes, the archive disappears eventually.

within that 122-133 days? or sooner?

Yes, within it (sometimes it may be a bit over 133)

I made a mistake earlier - once you deactivate your site, it will be deleted in 2 weeks, not 30-40 days.  At that point, your system is shut down, and the only people who have access to it are Atlassian backup engineers (and even then, not in a directly usable form - the backups are only suitable for restoring a broken a deleting system)

Thanks for all the great replies :) One final question, is there a way to peed up the final deletion, or do we just need to wait out the time frames?

Thanks,

You could raise a support request, ask if Atlassian would kill it off sooner (or just stop backing it up after the first couple of weeks)
