Hi everyone!

Recently I came across this research about AI’s impact on the developer experience. The survey was conducted among 500 US-based developers who work at companies with 1,000+ employees. What caught my attention is the top 5 metrics to measure developers' performance mentioned there. Here they are:

  • Code quality - 40% of respondents emphasize the importance of clean and efficient code
  • Time to complete a task - 34% focus on efficient task completion
  • Number of production incidents - 34% value minimizing disruptions
  • Lines of code written - 33% consider code quantity
  • Number of bugs or issues resolved - 33% track problem-solving

I wonder if these metrics truly reflect developer performance or if they need to include other elements like innovation or collaboration.

At my team, Awesome Graphs for Bitbucket, we believe that every business is unique and what works for one may not work for another. Even in our company, each team uses its own approach to evaluate performance, not even mentioning large corporations.

Please share your opinion on whether developer performance is worth measuring and how? What are the most interesting metrics for evaluating engineering productivity you've heard of?

Let’s talk!
