How does a developer use BitBucket?

Greetings. I am totally new to BitBucket.

A friend asked if I could possibly help with his app, and all that he knows is that the code is stored in BitBucket.

My question is as follows:

What development tools (like Visual Studio, etc.) are typically used to develop the app and that knows how to 'connect' to BitBucket to see the code in order to modify or add features to the app?
