Work on Google Drive documents and even watch YouTube videos without leaving Jira

Now you can collaborate in real-time with your teammates without leaving Jira. Atlassian has enhanced the "Smart Links" functionality, and in this post, I'll explain you how it works and I’ll share an example with you.

First of all, Smart Links allows you to preview links from applications like Google Drive, YouTube, or Loom directly within Jira, making external information more accessible. They also automatically recognize the link source and display it with a representative icon, providing a more user-friendly visual experience. Supported resources include links to Slack, Zoho, and even pages from the Atlassian Community.

However, the most impressive feature is the ability to work in real-time on documents or spreadsheets stored in Google Drive. All you need to do is:

  1. Create a URL custom field
  2. Associate it with an issue type.
  3. Paste the document's access URL (make sure the email you use to log-in to Jira also has access permissions for the Google Drive document).
  4. Now, when you return to the issue, you'll see the Smart Link—whether from the board view or the issue view.
  5. Hover over the URL and select "Open preview."
  6. That’s it! From here, you can work directly. Notice that you’re still in Jira.

In the following video, I’ll show you how you could work in Google Drive files within Jira:

Note: Google presentations can only be previewed.

Lastly, Smart Links will also let you link YouTube videos and watch them within the Jira interface. The process to do it is the same as explained above.

I hope you find all this useful!!

Special note: It's funny that now you can add videos to Confluence and even Jira, but not in the Atlassian community posts.
