We recently hosted another office hour session and were grateful for the chance to respond to your inquiries and hear your direct feedback. Our aim for these sessions is to showcase more of Atlassian Analytics capabilities and provide practical examples of how you can use it further to gain data insights in your own organizations.
To recap the topics discussed this month, here are some of the top questions and answers that came up during this round of office hours:
Q: What’s the best way to cast a string into a date?
A: If you have a date column that is stuck in string formatting, you can use the STRFTIME() function in an “Apply formula” or “Formula column” step. Our documentation has some of the date formatting that you can apply to the column using the function to convert it into a date. Alternatively, if your data value is already in the YYYY-MM-DD format, you can use a CAST() function to cast it as a date column type.
Q: What is the best way to filter by custom fields on the query level? We have created custom columns on the schema for the custom fields but when we try to use them as query filters, the data comes back blank.
A: If you have your custom fields already added to the schema via a custom column, we recommend checking the SQL used to define your custom column to make sure it’s bringing in the desired field. You can also query the custom column itself to verify that the expected values for the custom field are displayed. Setting up a custom table with Jira custom fields will allow you to filter a query by multiple custom fields at once.
Q: When onboarding new Jira projects, we want the new Jira projects to be added automatically to our Atlassian Data Lake connection without requiring an Edit Connection step. Can this manual process be removed?
A: We currently don’t let Jira projects be automatically added to Atlassian Data Lake connections due to security reasons, as it may inadvertently expose sensitive data to users. There is a feature suggestion ticket, ANALYTICS-119, that you may follow or comment on if this is something you would also like to see in Analytics.
Q: How are multi-select custom Asset attribute data stored in the Atlassian Data Lake?
A: The third example, titled “The number of objects with a particular attribute,“ in this knowledge base article, discusses how to query the data of a particular attribute. Attribute data can be found in the “Asset object attribute” and “Asset type attribute metadata” tables.
Q: Is there a feature request on adding titles for dashboard controls?
A: Yes! Our team has started working on adding the ability to give a dashboard control a title so you won’t need to add a separate content element with text. You can follow the feature suggestion ANALYTICS-162 to stay informed of the updates related to this feature.
Thanks again to everyone who joined us! As always, don’t hesitate to contact support for any assistance outside of office hours. 🙂
