Atlassian Account asking for 2FA when I never set it up

Drongo October 19, 2024

I just created a new account 2 days ago, and signed out accidentally. After attempting to get back in, it's now asking for a 2FA code. Only one problem - I intentionally never secured the account with 2FA.

After doing the recovery options, it sends me an email where I can reset my password, which I do, then it asks me again for my 2FA.

I can't log a ticket because I can't log in, and after creating a new account it has become clear that there isn't actually a way to log a ticket.

Further, this isn't even the correct place for this post, but that's only because there's no correct place for this post.

Solved: logged in with my microsoft account instead of directly with the email address (note that I used a microsoft email address), and that appears to have forced a merge into the primary account. This is further verified by the email from Microsoft (and the fact there's no other security notifications prior to this):

Microsoft account
New app(s) have access to your data
Atlassian connected to the Microsoft account a****@*******.com.
If you didn't grant this access, please remove the app(s) from your account.

I have verified that I now have access to my Jira/Trello by doing this.

What the absolute F**k.

Welcome @Drongo

When you created a new account it also asked you for 2FA?

Drongo October 20, 2024

No, it didn't. I created this account without 2FA.

When you want to login with your old account with incognito mode, does it ask you for 2FA again?

Drongo October 20, 2024

Yes, it says the following:

"CONTINUE WITH TWO-STEP VERIFICATION
Enter your verification code to continue.

Can't use your phone?"

But there are no 2FA verfication codes in my verification app (nor did I ever enable 2FA)

Is there a way to actually lodge a ticket? Because the only thing I could find was coming here to ask for help. No contact number either.

Weird thing is:

  • I never enabled 2FA.
  • I accidently logged out of Jira. Attempted to log back in and it said I needed to use a 2FA code.
  • It logged me out of Trello also, on all of my devices.
  • So I did an account recovery request:

We've received your request to recover access to your Atlassian account. We're sorry that you've had trouble with two-step verification.

We'll send you another email in 24 hours that will have a one-time login link to give you access to your account. The delay is needed for security reasons.

If you didn't request to recover your account, or no longer wish to continue with this process, you can cancel it by logging in to your account.

If you need to, you can contact Atlassian Support.

Cheers,
The Atlassians

  • After clicking on the link in the email to log into my account, and clicking the "need help logging in?" button that I was prompted with, it said it would send a recovery link to my email:

We've received a request to set a new password for this Atlassian account:

a***********@*****.com.

Set Password

If you didn't request this, you can safely ignore this email.

  • So I changed my password.
  • They sent the confirmation that my password has been changed:

Hi Drongo,

We’re confirming that you changed your Atlassian account password for a*********@******.com

If you didn't make this change, follow these steps to secure your account:

  • Yet still, I can't log in as I need the 2FA code. So somehow, I can reset/change password despite not even having 2FA which doesn't seem right.
  • Either way, still can't log in. Guess I'll wait the 24 hours and hope that it sends me another email with recovery options and doesn't consider the fact that I changed my password and "logged in" but failed to get past 2FA as a login attempt.
