✨ Atlas is evolving!

Back in 2022 we introduced a new product called Atlas, the first teamwork directory to help teams communicate better and allow organizations to connect the dots across their teams, apps, and work. But since our goal has always been to help as many teams as possible, we wanted to make Atlas even more accessible to Atlassian users everywhere.

That’s why we announced at the recent Team ‘24 that Atlas will be retired as a product, and its features will become the first of Atlassian’s Platform Experiences available to every Atlassian customer for free. That means no more product licenses to provision or user access to manage - if you have an Atlassian product in your workspace, you’ll be able to use goals, projects, teams, and topics and get an upgraded Atlassian Home experience.

This is just one of the major shifts toward focusing on connected experiences through the Atlassian Platform, creating a more unified system of work for all types of work. Building this connected platform of apps and tools will take time, but delivering goals, projects, teams, and topics in a centralized way is a major stepping stone toward connecting work across all of the tools and apps that teams use.

As of May 1st new Atlas workspaces can no longer be provisioned and over the coming months existing Atlas customers will be migrated from Atlas to the new Platform Experiences. If you’re reading this and aren’t an Atlas customer but would like to access Platform Experiences like goals or projects, you can do so with our early access program.

So what is actually changing?

In the short term (following 6~12 months):

  • We’re retiring the Atlas brand. Atlas features will now be grouped under the new Platform Experiences in Admin Hub

  • All Atlas features, including paid features, will be available for free to all Atlassian customers who have access to Platform Experiences

  • Atlas can no longer be provisioned as a product. To access Atlas features you will have to opt in to the Platform Experiences early access program

  • In the months following this announcement we’ll start migrating Atlas customers to Platform Experiences. Your organization admins will receive communication via email before we migrate your site

  • The URL to access the usual screens you associate with Atlas will change from https://team.atlassian.com to https://home.atlassian.com

  • Our plan is to add enterprise compliance that wasn’t previously available with Atlas. We will update this article whenever we add new certification to Platform Experiences.

In the long term:

  • Stronger integrations between Platform Experiences features and your Atlassian products

  • New Platform features and capabilities that will increase the connections between products, help teams share information, and improve how you work across Atlassian

  • More upgrades to the Atlassian Home

What’s not changing?

Your data.

We’ll ensure that existing Atlas customers keep all the data they created in Atlas when migrating them to Platform Experiences.

You will still be able to create projects, goals, topics, and teams. You will have access to the different directories, be able to post updates, and receive weekly digests.

What do I need to do?

Nothing!

Over the coming months we’ll gradually be rolling out Platform Experiences to all Atlassian customers. As part of that rollout, we’ll also transition all Atlas workspaces to the new Atlassian Home experience.

During this transition you’ll maintain all your Atlas data. This includes any projects, goals, topics, updates, and anything else you created in Atlas.

If you aren’t an Atlas customer already you can still access Platform experiences, now in beta, via our early access program. To read more about the program check out our guide here: https://support.atlassian.com/platform-experiences/docs/participating-in-the-platform-experiences-early-access-program/

IMPORTANT! You can’t opt a site into Platform Experience early access if it already has an Atlas workspace attached. We’ll be transitioning all Atlas workspaces to Platform Experiences so we recommend that you wait for the transition. You’ll get to keep all your existing Atlas data as part of this transition.

Note that during the early stages of the beta, there will not be a significant advantage to transitioning from Atlas to Platform Experiences early access program yourself.

Thank you!

Thank you for supporting Atlas over the last couple of years, or longer if you were part of our beta or early access program. Your feedback and questions helped shaped a lot of what Atlas was and what Platform Experiences will be.

And don’t worry, we’re not going anywhere! The same team that has been working on Atlas will continue working on Platform Experiences. We will continue on our mission and strive to build experiences that help connect between your teams, apps, and your work.

As always, we would love to hear from you! I would encourage you to ask your questions or leave feedback on this post. Otherwise you can always click on the “Give feedback” button in Atlas and reach us there.

Cheers,

The Atlas (and Platform Experiences) team

FAQs

Q1. If I’m an existing Atlas customer do I need to opt in to the early access program to get the new Platform Experiences?

A1. No, we will migrate your Atlas to Platform Experiences in the months following this announcement.

Q2. When my Atlas is migrated to Platform Experiences, will I lose the data I created in Atlas like my goals and projects?

A2. Not at all! We’ll make sure to bring all your Atlas data to Platform Experiences

Q3. What if I’m a paying Atlas customer?

A3. By the time you’re reading this your billing admin would’ve received an email explaining the next steps. If you paid for an yearly subscription, you will receive credit for the remaining time in your plan. If you’re paying month-to-month we won’t bill you after April 30th.

Q4. I’m a regular Atlas user, will you be removing any features I might be using?

A4. No, all Atlas features will be migrated to Platform Experiences. You might see a different logo and no more mentions of Atlas but the core functionality will remain the same. Over time we will be adding to and improving these experiences.

Is there any reason why the Early Opt-In button might not appear?

Hi @David Harper this is likely because you already have Atlas. See the "What do I need to do?" section and the disclaimer at the end of it for more details.

If you have a site/s without Atlas and you still can't see the sign up button let me know and I'll look into it for you

We were NOT on Atlas, and just signed up to participate in the Platform experiences beta. I'm looking forward to our organization adopting and using these features.

I am pretty excited that this is coming to life and being able to track your goals across all the different products. It will really centralize how we work.

Since this is transitioning into the "Platform", is there a timeframe the the standard and premium features will be available to the "Free" tier (mostly asking about the user roles and permissions), as well as the viewing capabilities of groups/teams of users.

I think this is the right move for sure. Though I really haven't played with atlas other than a brief time after launch. I need major training. 😏

What does this mean for existing Atlas permissions? If access to Atlas was limited, once migrated to PE will all users be able to see past goals and create new ones?

Hi all, just came back from leave so thanks for waiting on me!

@Ken Young

Since this is transitioning into the "Platform", is there a timeframe the the standard and premium features will be available to the "Free" tier (mostly asking about the user roles and permissions), as well as the viewing capabilities of groups/teams of users.

All previously paid features should already be available for free to everyone, both Atlas customers and early access customers (e.g. custom fields, private projects).

At the moment I don't have a timeline I can share but it is something we're working on. We know this is important to many customers and we won't launch the new Platform Experiences out of early access without user controls and permissions.

@Adam Nichiporuk

What does this mean for existing Atlas permissions? If access to Atlas was limited, once migrated to PE will all users be able to see past goals and create new ones?

We won't migrate existing Atlas customers to the new experience until we implement a permission model that allows you to maintain the same level of user management you have today.

This hasn't been shipped to the EAP yet but we're working on it.

So excited for this change. When does per user billing for existing customers stop?

Thanks,

Michael

Hi @Michael Seguin, billing stopped when the post was published, start of May 2024. You shouldn't be getting charged for Atlas since then

Is Atlassian Goals still considered to be in EAP?  I found this site:  Participating in the Platform Experiences early access program | Platform experiences | Atlassian Support

which shows Atlassian Goals as an EAP product.

If officially released, is there a URL starting this or a reference in the product updates I see from administration site?

We are in the middle of adopting Atlas. When will the change to Platform Experiences take place if we already have an Atlas instance?

Hi @William _Bill_ Klein, yes, Atlassian Goals are part of Platform experiences and are still in EAP. They will be for a while but we will be rolling them out to Atlassian customers over time.

Hi @Darrel Jackson, there's no set date yet. We're still working on ensuring seamless migration from Atlas the product to Platform experiences. Once this is done we'll start the migration. We expect for this to happen towards the end of 2024 or start of 2025. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns about the migration that aren't covered by the post.

Note that this migration won't impact your adoption. You will still be able to access all the same features and capabilities you have today and you will maintain all your projects, goals, and other Atlas data. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the info @Nir Nikolaevsky

I'm not worried about the migration activity itself. I'm just nervous about doing an evaluation that comes with a lot of stakeholder management and a proof-of-concept when the underlying tool might change. I get that at a high level there will be feature parity. But at a detailed level? Will the URL be the same? Will look and feel be the same?

Also do we expect any of these features in the new experience:

  • support for Automation
  • privilege model (e.g. creators vs collaborators vs read-only)
  • audit log

Hi thanks for the update.  This comment:

All Atlas features, including paid features, will be available for free to all Atlassian customers who have access to Platform Experiences

Does this mean we will need to pay for Platform Experiences or is that a free solution for Atlassian instances?

@Darrel Jackson make sense, I'll address your specific questions but let me know if you have any other concerns!

Will the URL be the same?

It won't be but all existing links and smartlinks will redirect automatically

Will look and feel be the same?

Yes. If there will be new features shipped or changes to look and feel they will be unrelated to the migration.

support for Automation

In the longer term I would think so but we don't have immediate plans to ship automation support

privilege model (e.g. creators vs collaborators vs read-only)

We're working on adding separate project and goal permissions. These will allow admins to say which users or groups have access to projects and goals in general, effectively replicating Atlas product access.

We're also discussing adding more granular read/write controls in the future but there's no eta for this at the moment.

audit log

We already provide some audit logs but we do aim to have more events captured in the logs sometime after the migration

Let me know if you have any more questions!

Hi @Monty Bhatia, the core Platform experiences and it's current features (essentially Atlas features) are and will be free for all Atlassian instances.

It could be that some paid products or plans will integrate and enhance the experience in the future, but Platform experiences as presented here is a free experience that down the line will be available to all existing and new customers by default.
