I think there may be some open source CMDB options out there you might be able to self host. Using a shared spreadsheet would work as well until you find a tool and may make importing to a platform easier when time comes. Mainly for asset management you'll need a workflow and lifecycle to get and keep data up to date which is more important than what tool is used,
