New improvements to mobile app security in Atlassian cloud

Hi Atlassian Community,

We hear from customers that the new normal of distributed teams and mobile devices is great for teams because of the flexibility that it provides them in choosing where and how they work and collaborate. However, it also presents security challenges for their organizations. The wider adoption of mobile devices makes it increasingly difficult for you to maintain control and visibility over mobile access to your organization’s data - how can you ensure you know who has access and how they are gaining access?

You need to be able to enforce mobile security controls at scale for your users to ensure that they are accessing your Atlassian cloud data within established guardrails. That’s why we have released three mobile security improvements to Atlassian Guard and our cloud platform to provide you with greater visibility and control over how users access data via Atlassian mobile apps and whether they are complying with mobile security policies.

  1. Multiple mobile app management (MAM) policies - available with Atlassian Guard Standard

In 2022, we launched mobile app management (MAM) to make it easier for admins to enforce mobile security controls at scale by implementing a single mobile app policy for your organization. Since then, we’ve heard from customers about the need to create MAM policies with varying levels of restriction. Now, you can create multiple MAM policies and target individual apps, in addition to a blanket policy for the entire organization.

  1. Mobile app usage insights - available with all cloud plans

Insights into your organization’s people and product usage is an important way to keep track of product adoption, make data-driven decisions about who needs access to products, and evaluate your organization’s security posture. With mobile usage insights, track the adoption and usage of Atlassian mobile apps (Confluence, Jira, and Opsgenie) within your organization, and identify any potential security risks. And, if you have Atlassian Guard, you can act on those insights and address risks through MAM policies to safeguard your data across Atlassian apps.

  1. External browser for MDM - available with all cloud plans

Mobile device management (MDM) allows admins to enforce security settings on all mobile devices enrolled in the company’s MDM program. For Atlassian mobile iOS applications, user login is usually directed to be completed via the Safari browser. Organizations utilizing MDM providers such as Microsoft Intune restrict logins to Microsoft Edge. With this feature, admins can now implement new AppConfig settings to facilitate logins in external browsers, specifically Microsoft Edge, removing these restrictions for their users.

These updates are part of our ongoing commitment to providing you with mobile app security capabilities that enable you to continually assess and improve your organization’s security posture, while still allowing teams the flexibility to work securely from mobile devices. We are continuing to expand mobile security with mobile session timeouts and more mobile insights. Subscribe to our cloud roadmap to stay updated.
