The new way of working: integrations and partnerships paved the way for team collaboration in 2021

You know that feeling when you jump around from app to app, reading notifications, responding to messages, looking for files - and then you’ve forgotten what you were even trying to accomplish?

That’s context switching - and it can absolutely destroy your team’s productivity.

In a world of hybrid and remote work, we rely on digital tools more than ever to stay connected and keep projects on track. So this year was a critical one to bring together the Atlassian tools you know and love, like Jira, Bitbucket, and Confluence, with the software you can’t live without, like Slack, Microsoft, and Google to get work done and minimize distractions. We also focused on emerging categories that are gaining ground in the world of hybrid and remote work - like Miro, Mural, Snyk, and others.

But in true Atlassian fashion, we know that not all integrations are created equal. That’s why we launched Open DevOps to give you an open toolchain that feels like all-in-one.

The expansion of integration offerings available in the Atlassian Marketplace, plus the launch of Open DevOps, led to Atlassian customers installing about 210,000 integrations in 2021 - that’s like the capacity of 3 NFL stadiums. 🤯

We couldn’t have achieved these kinds of results without our partners, and since we know everyone loves a good year in review post, let’s take a look at some of the highlights!


Slack, meet Confluence. 👋

In July, we announced a brand new integration between Confluence Cloud and Slack, bringing your personal Confluence notifications right into the Slack app. You can customize your notifications by adding the Confluence Cloud for Slack app and typing the command /confluence notify into the message bar. Once set up, you can respond to notifications in Slack (liking, commenting, etc.) and your actions will automatically post to Confluence.

Microsoft Teams 

Virtual meetings are now more productive thanks to new integrations for Confluence and Jira in Microsoft Teams, making it easy to organize meeting notes and action items as well as view and edit tickets. 🗂

The new Confluence Cloud for Teams integration allows you to take notes during a meeting and publish them as a new Confluence page. This helps keep your team on track and remember what was discussed - and if someone can’t attend, they have a page to reference and get caught up. You can also customize Confluence notifications in Teams to respond to page updates, comments, and mentions right in the platform.

Jira for Teams allows anyone involved in software development or project management to have a single, shared view of the work ahead with the ability to create, edit, or view tickets with meeting attendees. Like Confluence, you can customize Jira notifications for tickets you’re assigned to or are watching. You can even search or view specific Jira issues from a Teams chat. 💬

Amazon Web Services 

Just like many of our customers, Atlassian works closely with AWS to deliver great products. This year, we took a few key steps to deepen our partnership.

It was no small feat, but this year we successfully migrated all of Bitbucket Cloud, all 50 million repositories that receive over 1 billion daily transactions, to Atlassian’s internal cloud platform hosted on AWS. And this happened with absolutely 0️⃣ downtime.

Our customers are seeing some amazing outcomes as a result. Reliability-related support cases have dropped by 93%, while web response times averaged 55% faster than in 2020. Enhanced security and encryption, along with eliminating the risks that come with data center operations and maintenance, made migration to AWS a no-brainer. 🔐

Earlier in the year, we hosted a webinar with AWS that drew 2,200 attendees and discussed how to set up Atlassian tools like Jira, Bitbucket, and Opsgenie to build, test, and deploy to AWS Lambda. In this session, we covered core competencies like setting up Bitbucket pipelines, making code changes, and handling test failures or outages.


At this year’s Google Next Conference, we had the opportunity to speak about Atlassian’s product integrations and their impact on team collaboration.

In a conversation with Javier Soltero, VP & GM, Google Workspace at Google Cloud, Joff Redfern, Chief Product Officer at Atlassian said:

Modern work requires people to switch contexts and tools faster than ever before. We believe an open ecosystem and tight integrations, among the tools that users rely on every day, is vital to their success. Since 2017, our Trello integration with Gmail has been installed by more than 7 million people. Today, we are excited to build on the partnership between Atlassian and Google to propel work collaboration further with the integration of Jira with Google Chat and Spaces.

The latest release of the Google chatbot for Jira integration allows users to create new Jira tickets, see previews, and monitor active issues right in a Google Chat.


Whiteboarding tools have exploded in the past couple of years, especially as remote and hybrid meetings became the new norm. The Jira integration with Miro allow you to add existing Jira issues to a Miro board, or create new issues from a card on your board. Teams can focus on creative brainstorming in a less structured environment (who doesn’t love jotting things down on sticky notes 📝), and then when you’re ready to bring your idea to life, it will automatically show up in Jira for building and deployment.

To continue the conversation around the new way of working, Atlassian’s Head of IT Strategy and Planning, Jenna Cline, shared her expertise in a panel discussion. She discussed Atlassian’s TEAM Anywhere initiative, where employees are empowered to choose where they work, and our approach to onboarding new hires remotely with the help of Trello.

Open DevOps 🚀

In Atlassian’s spirit of being an open company, we doubled down on that value with the launch of Open DevOps in April 2021. Powered by Jira Software, you can automatically integrate Atlassian products like Bitbucket, Confluence, and Opsgenie with your favorite third-party tools so you can build and ship all in one place.

To introduce Atlassian Open DevOps and showcase how to use our tools with other industry leaders, we hosted a 5-session TeamTalks series from October-November 2021. We were thrilled to welcome over 1,200 attendees to these talks, where we featured platform partners like AWS and Snyk.

The GitHub integration with Jira was updated in the fall, allowing you to view builds and deploys in Jira, create automations, access a calendar view of deployments, and run reports and view insights based on your GitHub data. 📊

At our Team ‘21 conference, we announced a partnership with Snyk to launch an embedded security integration in Bitbucket Cloud so teams can get real-time insights into any potential risks or vulnerabilities. When you log into Bitbucket, there’s a Security tab in the side navigation where you can quickly add Snyk to your account. Once the integration is live, you can access Snyk insights within Bitbucket and resolve issues before they’re escalated to your security team.


The LaunchDarkly for Jira Cloud integration allows you to apply feature flags to Jira issues. 🚩 Within Jira, you can create a new feature flag, connect an existing feature flag to a Jira story, and associate issues with custom properties. You can even roll out a new feature to a designated percentage of users.


SmartBear has a suite of integrations available for Jira and Confluence, focused on supporting agile teams throughout the test management process, from design to execution to real-time reporting. 📈 You can link tests to existing Jira issues, take advantage of 70 different cross-project reports and dashboards, and even capture audio/visual feedback to prioritize next steps.
