It’s officially ready: the Adobe XD and Jira Software integration for designers and developers

Design and Develop Together.png

We’ve made big improvements to the way Adobe XD and Jira Software work together this year. We've focused on streamlining collaboration between designers and developers and we’re excited to share an update on what we’ve released and how to implement these improvements for your design and development teams whether you use Jira Cloud, Jira Server, or Jira Data Center. For Jira Admins, if your team uses Adobe XD, this is going to be a very valuable resource for you and your users.

For those in the Atlassian Community not yet aware of the integration of Adobe’s all-in-one UX/UI design tool and Jira Software, we have two integrations: the Adobe XD app for Jira (an add-on available on the Atlassian marketplace), and the Jira Cloud plugin for designers (available in the XD plugin manager).

XD app for Jira

The XD app for Jira gives developers instant access to shared prototypes and design specs, right there in a Jira issue for context. This makes it easier for them to stay informed when designs are updated with a rich preview of the designs, right alongside details of the relevant issue where they need it. In the latest version, you’ll get metadata, like the number of artboards and comments, face-piles for Jira users that have viewed the XD document, and more. The added context helps design teams better collaborate with product managers, developers, and other stakeholders, as they view XD designs from right within Jira Software.

With the ability to share the latest designs using rich previews, along with the ability to attach them to Jira issues at the drop of a link, this integration has helped streamline the design-to-development workflow for thousands of users. This includes Adobe XD customers like Poshmark, a social shopping and selling community, that uses XD to design new tools and experiences that make it easy and fun for buyers and sellers to connect and help each other succeed.

“The Jira Cloud integration is very helpful, as we have been struggling with some of these very tedious parts of the process and were able to easily make the case to our admin and have the integration installed for our teams,” said Marie West, Poshmark’s senior UX design manager.

In March, we added support for Jira Software Server and Jira Software Data Center to bring these benefits to enterprise customers that need a custom solution with special data governance requirements.

Jira Cloud plugin for XD

And in August, we took things one step further with the launch of the Jira Cloud plugin for XD, which helps designers more easily collaborate with developers. Rather than having to switch context to drop links into Jira, the new plugin lets designers quickly export assets, share links to designs, and associate them with Jira issues without leaving XD.

Designers say this helps them stay focused as they can collaborate with developers without leaving their primary design tool, and at the same time, communicating updates have never been easier. This integration means that updates to published designs in XD show up instantly in Jira issues with an “updated tag” to alert developers that the design has changed. And developers love that they now have one place to quickly view the latest prototypes and design specs including which Jira users have viewed the designs so they know who they need to follow up with.

You can learn more about the XD app for Jira from our listing on the Atlassian marketplace. For designers using Adobe XD, you can download the free Jira Cloud plugin, which is a perfect companion for teams using Jira Cloud. Now that there are three hosting options to choose from, we’ve created a useful article for Jira Admins on how to enable the XD app for Jira for your organization whether you’re using Jira Cloud, Jira Software, or Jira Data Center.

This is really great, it works fine and we are using it every day. However, on the JIRA ticket the links take up a lot of space. The artboard thumbnail is of little use if the artboard contains more than just one or two design components – the thumbnail all kind of look the same – so we could live without it if it meant reducing the size of the XD link box.

The option to add a description is great but we don't need to see the description at all times, so space can also be saved there: An option to expand/collapse each XD link would be great, show/hide thumbnail and description. Collapsed XD links should then keep with the design of JIRA and look like other lists on the ticket, like the list of sub-tasks.
