Channel notification in Microsoft Teams for Jira Cloud application

Hello Community!,

If you are looking for the ways how to notify your team about Jira tickets updates in Microsoft Teams - Channel notifications feature of Jira Cloud application by Atlassian is for you.

Channel notifications allows you to configure notifications when ticket is created/updated or comment created/updated in specific Jira project. And you shouldn't be a Jira admin for that.

In order to configure notifications for your channel or group chat in Teams please add Jira Cloud application to your team or chat firstly.

Then go to the preferred channel or chat itself and call notifications or help command from Jira Cloud application (@Jira Cloud notifications/@Jira Cloud help)

After running the command you will see the bot response from where you can start notifications configuration

Click on "Start getting Jira notification in channel" and you should see next popup:

That is initial configuration screen you will see if there is no active configurations for this channel/chat.

Click "Add new" button, it will open notification configuration screen:

On this screen you can configure notifications for specific Jira Cloud project you have an access to. You can select filtering by issue type and/or priority

or you can switch to JQL mode and configure the filtering more specifically to your needs

Note:

So far we are supporting next events:

issue_created
issues_updated
comment_created
comment_updated

Also, you can configure just one configuration per project, but you can always modify the previous configuration.

After saving the configuration Jira Cloud will send the message to the channel/chat with details about new configuration. This will help you track the configuration changes.

Screenshot 2023-01-25 at 19.11.36.png

You can change this configuration later by clicking "Make changes" on the card or by calling Jira Cloud bot help/notification command again

This time you will see the card with a list of all projects from where you are receiving notifications

Screenshot 2023-01-25 at 19.14.27.png
After clicking "Make changes" you will see the popup with all configurations, where you can add, edit, remove or mute configuration.
Each change to the configuration will send the message to the chat, so your team will be notified about that.

Note:

Any authenticated user of Jira Cloud that is member of the channel or that chat can change the previously configured notification settings.

Now after you configured notifications and Jira event is satisfy your filtering you should receive the notification in the channel or chat.

If you have an access to specific ticket, you can edit or comment the issue directly from the channel, by simply clicking "Comment" or "Edit issue" buttons on the card.

I really hope that this feature will make you communication in the team a bit easier and will help to use all the Jira Cloud application capabilities effectively. Happy notifying! 😀

The notification filtering by a specific field might be achieved by the JQL. But the changed keyword is applicable to the default fields only :)

Thanks for this article @Volodymyr Batrukh  and the comment @Volodymyr Hensorskyi  - it has help me over the last year!

Hi @Volodymyr Hensorskyi

Firstly, thanks a lot for this great article! It's helped me a lot while migrating our site away from the soon-depreciated O365 Jira Cloud Webhook Connector.

Do you know if this notification functionality is meant to work in shared or private Teams channels? I'm unable to @ the application in those channels to configure notifications, despite being able to add it as a tab.

Thanks in advance!

Hi @Tara Grünewald ,

Unfortunately, our bot isn't supported in private channels due to limitations on Microsoft Teams' side. You may find more information regarding restrictions here.
Perhaps, you have installed the bot as a tab only rather than adding it as a bot and tab. There are different install options while configuring an app.

But, as far as I know, mentioning a bot should be possible within Microsoft Teams event it's not added. Microsoft will automatically install it to a channel/chat in case it's missing.

Are you unable to mention Jira Cloud bot in all your channels/groups?

Best regards,
Volodymyr

Thanks for the quick help @Volodymyr Hensorskyi :)

I'm able to add it to the team, add the tab to all channels (incl. shared and private) and @ it in all standard channels, but not able to @ it in a shared channel, which I guess behaves similar to a private channel behind the scenes as all members need to be manually added.

It's fine if it doesn't work in shared channels, I'll just create a second team with all members and make a standard channel for notifications. I just wanted to check in case I was missing something!

Once again, appreciate all your effort and support! Have a wonderful day!
