Get the Most Out of Jira Comments with Comment Toolkit: Label, Search, and Automate!

Picture this: You’re working on a complex Jira issue, and the comments are piling up—there’s a constant back and forth, feedback from clients, updates from devs, and so on. keeping track of all the comments can quickly become overwhelming and time consuming.

How can I better organize my Jira comments? How do I find the right ones quickly? How can people not directly involved in the conversation (your boss for the most part) can grasp a better understanding?

Sure, by default Jira comments can be classified into internal notes or direct replies to customers. You can also leverage Atlassian Intelligence to summarize your comments section. But is it enough? Not really and most of our customers agree and I’m sure you do too.

So what’s the solution? When you think of better organization and classification, labels are the first thing that come to mind. And that’s what our new app-Comment toolkit for Jira- is all about.

What’s Comment toolkit for Jira?

Comment toolkit for Jira is designed to help you organize, filter, and find the comments you need in Jira, using custom labels. Labels are shown within a replica of the existing comments section where you can create, locate and pin them. Additionally, the app is deeply integrated within your Jira site through JQL search and, of course, automations (keep reading to find out more 😛)

Why Comment toolkit for Jira?

  • Easily Label Comments for Quick Access:

Let’s say you’re tackling an issue with several stages and a long list of comments. Some comments are describing the issue, others are updates, and so on. By simply scrolling through your comment thread, you don’t have any indication of what each comment is about. You’ve got to read it. I mean reading is good but when it comes to long common threads, it becomes a waste of your time.

With Comment toolkit, you can label comments for easy filtering. The app provides a new, structured view of comments alongside the default list in Jira. On the left side, you’ll see a list of labels; click on any label to instantly access all comments associated with it. It’s simple, efficient, and saves you from sifting through the entire thread.

You can further facilitate access to key comments by pinning labels and making sure critical info is right where everyone can see it.

  • Search for Jira Issues Based on Comment Labels

Ever searched for an issue based on a single comment? Support agents and customers often do. So let’s say, you’re creating troubleshooting articles to enrich your JSM knowledge base. Your task is to locate all Jira issues with replies that might be considered useful to include.

The most straightforward way to achieve this is to look for comments based on their labels.

With Comment toolkit, we’ve introduced a new JQL function to help you filter Jira issues based on comment labels. Just use the function “CommentWithLabels”. Each label should be added as a string within double quotes ("label") and separated by commas, making it easy to locate the exact comment context you need.

So in our example, our search will look something like this: Issue in CommentWithLabels (“Troubleshooting”)

  • Trigger Automations based on Comments Labels:

Automations are key to saving time in Jira, and Comment toolkit takes that up a notch by triggering automations based on comment labels.

Whether you want to automatically assign issues, start sprints, notify a team,, you can now automate these actions all based on comments. And of course, the process is fairly simple. Your new rule will be based on incoming webhook, set up your condition, and then choose the desired action.

Here’s an example: automatically attach a form to a Jira ticket when a comment is labeled “Resolved.” Or, Assign the issue to DEV when a comment gets the label “Urgent” The possibilities are endless with a host of actions to choose from.

And there you have it! Comment Toolkit for Jira helps you better organize long comment threads, create dedicated automations, and generally make your life easier. The app is free and we encourage you to give it a go and provide us with your feedback.

Hi @Fares Laroui_Vectors_

Thank you for this information.

Your post indicates the app is free and the marketplace page indicates it is the first beta release, with no additional information provided on future release plans.  To help the community decide any usage, is the plan to convert to a paid application after a beta period or remain free permanently?  And if there is a "free during beta period", what is the planned duration of that period?  (Marketplace vendors often include that transition information on their marketplace page.)

Kind regards,
Bill
