Connect Slack to Jira to Consolidate Notifications

One of my 2024 goals is to consolidate the many tools I use each day so I can improve my focus and automate processes. Here's an easy win: I'm using my chat program as a "home base" for all Jira alerts and notifications. I use Slack to get select Jira updates about important issues I'm interested in right now. It's a huge time saver, especially when I'm mobile.

To integrate Jira and Slack you’ll need to connect the applications, connect Jira projects to Slack channels, and set notification preferences. There are many integration options. You can connect:

  • from Slack or the Slack App Directory,
  • from Jira or the Atlassian Marketplace,
  • using webhooks in Jira,
  • with automation in Jira Cloud,
  • or by creating your own custom Slack app.

For step-by-step connection instructions, read my Jira and Slack Integration for Enhanced Productivity article on Salto's website.

Connecting the apps is only the first step. It's important to prevent information overload. You probably already get too many email notifications, right? Don't let Slack notifications run wild and become another source of update spam! The goal is to receive the right amount of notifications as the right time. You absolutely must use JQL statements to segment the important information from all the other Jira changes occurring all day. I've compiled all my tips, shortcuts, and time savers so you can stay on top of the important changes in Jira and other applications without having to log into all of them separately. For example:

Favorite Slack Shortcut

Slack has bult-in "slash commands" that enable actions and interactivity between apps. The one I use the most is to look up any Jira issue to see it's status, assign it, transition it, or add additional information. Simply type a slash command in the format: /jira issueID.

Let's check on the tool consolidation goal I mentioned earlier. Here is the result of the command: /jira STRAT-98.

Then, use the "More actions" menu to add a comment, assign, or transition it. Easy.
