#16 Report of the Week: Time Tracking for Unreleased Versions

This week’s Report of the Week spotlights a powerful time tracking visualization designed to monitor project progress and assess estimation accuracy for unreleased versions.

16-Estimated and Logged Hours in Version.png

What Does the Report Show?

This report uses horizontal stacked bars to display three key metrics for each unreleased version:

  • Original Estimated Hours: Represented as scatter points, these indicate the initial estimates for each version.

  • Hours Already Spent: Shown as green bars, these highlight the work completed so far.

  • Remaining Estimated Hours: Displayed as gray bars that turn red if the total work (actual + remaining) exceeds the original estimate.

This visualization provides a clear, side-by-side comparison of work completed, work remaining, and how those values measure up against the original estimate.

Customization with Filters

This report includes several page filters to help you focus on specific data points:

  • Project: Drill down into a specific project or compare multiple projects together.

  • Priority: Focus on high-priority versions to ensure the volume of critical tasks is accurately assessed.

  • Issue Type: Narrow the analysis to specific issue categories like bugs, tasks, or stories.

  • Assignee: Analyze workload distribution across team members.

Additionally, the report only includes versions with original estimates greater than zero and focuses on unreleased versions to ensure relevance. When looking at released versions, the accuracy of the estimation is assessed by comparing logged hours with the original estimate hours, offering insights to improve future estimates.

Key Insights from the Report

The report is designed to help teams track project progress based on time tracking and uncover potential estimation issues. It enables you to:

  • Compare Estimates vs. Actual Work: See at a glance whether the total hours spent and remaining are within the original estimate or exceeding it.

  • Track Progress for Each Version: Understand how much work has been completed versus how much is left for every unreleased version.

  • Identify Estimation Problems: Quickly spot versions where estimates have been exceeded (highlighted in red).

  • Balance Workload Across Versions: Compare workloads across different versions to allocate resources effectively.
