We are trying to create a simple add on for JIRA (really just a web page that makes use of the API) and it seems like the easiest way to accomplish this and handle some of the authentication would be to use the Atlassian Connect framework, but we are using JIRA server instead of JIRA cloud. In the FAQs it says that Atlassian Connect was initially developed for JIRA cloud but would be coming to JIRA server. Is there any estimate on when that will happen?
Is there a way with the current functionality of JIRA server to accomplish the same thing (create an HTML page that appears in JIRA and can make use of the authenticated user's credentials) without creating a full blown Java based add-on?

Hi. We are developing a tool that generates JIRA server plugins from Atlassian Connect addon descriptors. If you still have interest see http://devpost.com/software/plugin-generator-from-atlassian-connect-to-jira-server-srdgvc.
We have decided that we will not be delivering support for Atlassian Connect in JIRA Server or Confluence Server.

It is possible to create a java plugin which can embed your iframes and simulate a lot of the Connect style experience.

Why? How do I use functionality available only to atlassian-connect on our servers then?
