Selling add-ons

Hello,

Is it possible to buy add-ons to JIRA Server beyond Atlassian Marketplace?

Is it possible to sell my own add-ons to JIRA beyond Atlassian Marketplace?

Are there any sanctions from Atlassian?

Laura and Jack have already given you most of what you need, but I wanted to add:

  • You can't sell Cloud apps outside the Marketplace - apps can only be installed on Cloud via there!
  • Atlassian doesn't have a problem with people who sell apps outside the Marketplace.  The only "sanction" I've seen is that it will usually block you from becoming a partner of any type (Solution, Marketplace, Platform, etc.), until you move them to the Marketplace.
  • You're fine if your application is not something that "plugs into" an Atlassian system.  If for example, I wrote "Mr Flibble's diary extension for Jira", then if it were a .jar or .obr file that you used the UPM to install into Jira, then that's a plugin.  If it's an application that runs as a separate service and talks to Jira over its REST API, then it's not a plugin, so it's all good to sell separately.
  • Technically, Atlassian does not support anything that has any 3rd party apps installed.  The worst case is that their support team can tell you "We can't help until you remove all the 3rd party apps", but I've never heard of them having to go that far.  (And of course in 6 months, that changes for Server to "nope because Server is not supported")

The cynic (meaning "realist") within me is actually expecting a lot of after-life work to go to partners next February, with declining numbers of Server -> Cloud migrations as most people want to move before the deadline, I suspect a lot of partners will pick up "We're staying on Server for a while longer, unsupported by Atlassian, can we ask you for help?".  Many partners will say "yes"!

Hello @Anna Konieczna ,

I know there are a few Marketplace Partners that have shared that they will continue selling licenses to their Server app products, albeit outside of Atlassian's Marketplace. You will need to check out the website or contact the companies behind the apps you would like to renew beyond the end of Server support.

As for selling apps outside of the Marketplace, if you don't list the app on the Marketplace, it would appear you aren't required to abide by the Marketplace Partner Agreement.

It would be interesting if these apps would pop up on other storefronts.

Given Jira is based off open source and has published APIs I'm sure it is possible to apply addon or create and sell. However the issue is going to be the unavailability of a marketplace to market/sell I would guess. The other big issue is support. I would have to assume that admins are going to be quite reluctant to add apps in an unsupported environment.

disclaimer - this is all just my opinion not based on documented facts.
