Can multiple issuetypes exist at the same level in a Portfolio hierarchy?

Brendan Andrews October 3, 2018

I don't have access to it but we are considering it.

I'm thinking specifically of:

  • Can tasks exist at the same level as stories?
  • How do bugs fit into the scope of an initiative - is it through linkage to stories or epics?

Hi Brendan,

Yes, you can have multiple issue types at the same hierarchy level in Portfolio. Check out the documentation here. The "Mapping Jira issue types to Portfolio for Jira levels" section at the bottom of the page should be useful to you.

How bugs fit into the scope of an initiative will depend on your hierarchy configuration. For example, if you have bugs configured to be at story level, they will fit underneath Epic level issues, which will fit underneath Initiative level issues. Issues at different hierarchy levels can be linked via the Parent Link field or the Epic Link field.

Cheers,

Clare and the Portfolio for Jira Server team

That's helpful, thank you Clare!

As a follow-up, how do bugs affect the view of completion of initiatives in Portfolio? Where the stories are complete but there are a few dozen bugs unestimated.

Hi Brendan,

Bugs will affect the completion in the same way that other issues at the story level do. Unestimated items shouldn't affect the completion of initiatives, regardless of what issue type they are.

Hope that helps :)

For Advanced Roadmaps, in the new interface. Please follow below steps to add multiple issue types as the same level:

- Go to Advanced Roadmap Hierarchy Configuration screen from Settings under Plans menu.

- Select the level at which you need to add the issue type, if adding to an existing hierarchy.

- The list is multi-select, choose the additional issue type.

- Click save changes.

On Jira Cloud, it is only possible to configure one single child not multiple issue types from the Issue type hierarchy setting:
