Custom issuetype in advanced roadmap

Gerardo Di Giuseppe April 1, 2022

Dear,

we have a custom issue type called "Feature".

We use it as an intermediate level between an Epic and a Story.

When we try to build a roadmap, there is no to show our Features.

How can we do that?

Thanks in advance,

Gerardo

Hi @Gerardo Di Giuseppe

Just for clarity, there are two types of Roadmaps...

  • Basic: This is available from your Board in the left-hand menu. Basic Roadmaps only show Epic and Story-level.
  • Advanced: This is a Jira Premium feature, and Roadmaps can be created via Plans > Create Plan from the main navigation menu

For Advanced Roadmaps, you first need to modify the Issue Hierarchy to include additional levels. You can see how to do this on this help page.

However, it is only possible to add these additional levels above Epic - not in-between Epic and Story - at this point.

For now, I would...

  • Treat Epic in Jira as your Feature
  • Add a custom level above Epic - this could be...
    • Initiative
    • Portfolio Epic / Program Epic
    • SAFe Epic - assuming you're doing SAFe

Once you've set your additional hierarchical levels - you'll need to...

  • Ensure the field Parent Link is on the Epic's screen
  • Populate each Parent Link with the relevant parent Issue
  • Ensure the parent Issues are included in your Plan's source data

This should be a temporary solution, as the ability to modify Epic to be called Feature is already in progress, see this Article

Hi @Gerardo Di Giuseppe ,

@Stephen Wright _Elabor8_ is right this isn't supported natively today. However we're working on a solution for this, you can find the details here https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Jira-articles/Rename-epics-in-your-company-managed-projects/ba-p/1874726
