Ability to pull all child issues of a particular issue type in a project - "Parent Link"

We are trying to pull the child tickets (Feature) of multiple parent tickets (Initiatives) linked through 'Parent Link' field (advanced roadmaps) without having to do it by issue keys.

Example: Lets say we have initiatives "ABC-1, ABC-2, ABC-3.... ABC-100" and each of these have child tickets (Features) linked via parent link and if I want to pull the full list of child tickets for all the initiatives in the project, here's how it is currently possible:

- "parent link" in (ABC-1, ABC-2, ABC-3,.....,ABC-100)

Every time a new initiative is added, we need to make sure that is included in the JQL so it will pull the child features.

What we are looking for is to be able to pull all the child tickets of a particular issue type tickets in a project. Something like this below:

- "Parent Link" in ("Project = ABC and issuetype = Initiative")

If this is already possible and I'm not aware of it, please share the JQL trick.

If it is not possible and If there is any other work around, we are more than happy to know it.

Unfortunately, you may have to use a third party plugin such as scriptrunner or JQL search extensions which give you the ability to have complex filters.  Note that some features may not work in cloud so you will have to trial them.

As you're on Jira Cloud, the correct answer is to get an app that provides JQL extensions you're looking for.

With standard JQL, you can only get a list of issues and export them to Excel for further processing. This works if you want to do a one-off analysis. If your use case is more dynamic than that, look beyond standard Jira.

Standard JQL doesn't easily allow it, but you can quickly find the results using our professional indexing service JQL Search Extensions

You can use this function to help you in your request:

ChildrenOfIssuesInQuery

For a given JQL subquery it finds children of resulting issues. It supports Advanced Roadmaps “Parent Link” and a standard Jira hierarchy Epic → Story → Subtask. Also have a look at ChildrenOfIssuesInQueryRecursive.

Examples:

issue in childrenOfIssuesInQuery("project='ACME' and type=Initiative")

Finds all epics in initiatives in project ACME.

issue in childrenOfIssuesInQuery("assignee=currentUser()")

Finds children of all of my tickets.
