Group management in Jira: Adding and managing multiple "departments"

Question

Hey guys,

I'm new to Jira.

I'm carrying out some project management duties in my internship and we want to get the marketing team on board with Jira. We want them to be able to track their work as they're pressed with many projects as is. We also want to be able to have other sub-departments be able to track their work.

With that being said, so far I created a sandbox model of our "marketing campaign", which consists of tasks and subtasks to be done by the end of the month. We have Jira Software (and I believe it has the same capabilities of Jira Core for business)

Now I want to create another department within Jira (one for the IT department in my company). I want this department to only see their projects, and I don't want them to be able to see projects from other departments like marketing.

To sum it up, how would I go about creating these different "departments", putting them into Jira, and setting their permissions to where they can only see the projects that they were assigned?

@Ian Balas Create a User group in JIRA for each department, containing only users of that department.

Then, modify the permission scheme (I recommend using a common permission scheme for projects of each department) for projects belonging to one department to have required permissions assigned to only the user group for that department, like "Browse Projects" permission.

OR

Even better, You can rather use Project Roles and assign the user group for a department to different Project Roles like Managers, Users, etc. for each of the project belonging to that department. And in the permission scheme for those projects, you can assign required permissions to Project Roles, rather than user groups.

JIRA works by GRANTING access. You can't restrict access. By default, it grants access to the group used to logon (used to be JIRA-users but may be different on your version).  This is probably where you're getting the access from.

* The FIRST thing you need to do to get control is to remove any groups with logon privileges from the permission scheme unless you absolutely want everyone to have that permission.
* Then I suggest you setup Project Roles for the various functions like, tester, QA, Browse Only, etc.
* One permission scheme will cover almost all projects. The project admin controls project role membership
